Amelia Curran "Hunter, Hunter" CD
Hunter, Hunter is both a homecoming and a departure for multiple ECMA winner Amelia Curran. The album, her first recorded in her hometown of St. John’s, signals Curran’s definitive arrival onto national and international scenes. Curran’s 2008 release, War Brides, captured the attention of critics across Canada and lead to the pronouncement of Curran as one of this country’s finest singer-songwriters.
Rich in metaphor, language and instrumentation, Hunter, Hunter speaks to unrequited longing, the notion of belonging and reflections on love both lost and found. “It’s Hunter, Hunter, not Hunter, Gatherer, if that makes sense,” she says. “It conveys a kind of haunting – a vibe of necessary cruelty to dig down to the deeper meanings of being alive day by day.” From acoustic numbers to full band tracks, Curran grapples with notions of self, memory, forgiveness and desire. “There is a reason matters of the heart have been the subject for artists for centuries. It is uncontrollable and owns us. Even to give up on love is to break one's own heart, which in itself is a precious part of love.”
That preciousness of heartache takes on an unabashed savagery in “The Mistress”, a standout track on Hunter, Hunter. “The Mistress” is a no nonsense manifesto, a calling out of love’s frivolity and one’s willingness to play the game. Listen to “The Mistress” and marvel at Curran’s ability to cut to the heart, and to cut it open.

The Dogberries "Salt Water Jazz" CD
In creating "Saltwater Jazz," - their third CD as The Dogberries - Charlie Barfoot and Jack Daw have continued pursuing their characteristically unstandard jazz music.
Focused on a layering of instrumentals, the pair at times push at the boundary of "what is jazz," presenting a mix that includes Latin or folk bars as soon as it includes something akin to a thread from a Coltrane, Davis or Monk.
The Dogberries' blended sound may not be the standard, said Barfoot, but it is jazz at its core. As music teachers, both Barfoot and Daw have studied extensively and learned from the famous standards before allowing themselves to begin experimenting with their sound, he said.
"It is jazz music," said Barfoot. "It's designed to inspire others to hopefully join the Newfoundland instrumental listening audience."
The pair said the experimentation heard on "Saltwater Jazz" comes from a love of improvisation more than any intense challenge to more traditional instrumentals.
Improvisation leads to discoveries that just happen to appeal to the pair, said Daw.
"If we were sitting down and saying that we have to put out this type of music or that type of music, (the line between jazz and other genres) is a line we'd have to think about," Daw said.
Barfoot said the song that he feels is most characteristic of this free approach is the title track. If forced to provide a label, the song would be "contemporary folk jazz," said Barfoot, who added he always prefers no labels added.
"It does have elements of folk ... and then there's solo elements with electric guitar and piano," he said. "Saltwater Jazz," is the key. "That says it all. That's what it is," said Daw.
Daw said the deep layering by the musicians is meant to fit as background music at dinner or during study, as much as it appeals to someone looking to lose themselves in mixed metres and the tiniest instrumental intricacies. "The more you listen to it, the more you hear," said Daw, adding the album also has an overall "smooth" sound with a careful ordering and relaxed transitions from one track to the next. "People listen to it and say, "I don't like jazz, but I like this,'" Barfoot said. The challenge now, said both men, is to bring the sounds of "Saltwater Jazz" to the wider jazz-appreciating audience. "We'd like to be included in some of the national jazz festivals and we're aiming on a tour for this summer," said Barfoot. "Saltwater Jazz" is now available at Fred's Records.
